| Kevin Spacey doesnt
like calling his new movie, American Beauty, "dark", especially knowing
that he played the role of a serial killer in one of the darkest movies ever, Seven.
This is, says Spacey, a very funny movie. Well, it may be funny, but its not
amusing, Which, in this case, is not all that bad. American Beauty is not as much a
movie of action as much as it is a movie of dialogues and characters. Good characters are
too many to mention, but they all function and develop well in interaction with others. At
least 90% of the scenes has not more than two characters in it. Spacey is Lester Burnham,
middle-aged cubicle warrior, who finds his morning shower masturbation ritual a peak of
his day. In his own words, "everything is downhill from here". His wife Carolyn
(excellent Annette Benning) is an ambitious real-estate agent. She cures her frustrations
with marriage and family having an affair with the local real estate "king" (the
scene where she says "Fuck me, your majesty!" is priceless in understanding her
character, not as a bad word, but a senseless wish came true). Lester soon becomes
obsessed with his daughters cheerleading friend. This obsession, however, is shown
more like a dream or a fantasy of his, even as an inspiration. Lester quits his job in a
hilarious final showdown with his spineless boss, starts working out with a gay couple
from the neighborhood, smokes pot, buys the car he always wanted and gets a job in a
fast-food establishment ("Give me the position with the least possible
responsibility", he asks in the interview). In other words, he starts making his dreams come
true, turning into an unlikely hero of a sort. That attitude and his newly rekindled flame
of self-confidence would cost him his life, of course. Which reminds me a lot of Great
Gatsby. Both of them wanted to be different without realizing that the world cant
stand different people, constantly finding way to punish them. Both of them end their
lives due to a tragic misunderstanding, because there is truly no other way their
situation could be reconciled.
American Beauty teaches us to
recognize the beauty in our everyday life, simply because its the only one
well ever get. The false dilemma is whether to sneak up through life or face it
directly and live it to the fullest, regardless of the consequences. In one scene, Carolyn
shows a glimmer of honesty and true feelings until she becomes afraid Lester would spill
beer on the sofa. She recites how much it costs, like a true salesman she is, finishing
her speech with, "Its not just a sofa!" The sad part is we know she means
it, but we cant find resentment for her in our hearts, only pity.
Other than amazing Spacey, another
powerful, however deNiro-like underplayed performance comes from the newcomer. Wes Bentley
in the role of a video-filming, drug-dealing freak, who turns out to be not more a freak
than his militaristic psycho of a father and an emotional wreck that he calls a mother. It
might be too early to talk Oscars, but American Beauty should contend in the most
important categories, acting and screenplay

Kevin
vrlo smijesan film. Smijesan, mozda, ali ne i zabavan. Sto u ovom slucaju nije lose.
"American Beauty" nije toliko film radnje, koliko film dijaloga i likova. Dobrih
Kako sam kaze, "odavde sve ide nizbrdo". Njegova supruga Carolyn (odlicna
Drugim rijecima, pocinje
ostvarivati svoje snove. To ce ga kostati zivota, kao i Velikog Gatsbyja, zbog istog
razloga.
